Postmodern Artist to Receive 2016 Julius Shulman Institute听Excellence in Photography Award at Opening Night Event
LOS ANGELES (March 2, 2016) 鈥� On March 3, the Julius Shulman Institute at will present 鈥淛ames Welling,鈥� an exhibit of recent works by the postmodern artist, at the university鈥檚 WUHO Gallery on Hollywood Boulevard. Welling will receive the 2016听 Excellence in Photography Award at the opening night event.

was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1951. He grew up in nearby听Simsbury where, in 1963, he began to study art with Julie Post. Welling was deeply influenced by the work of Charles Burchfield, Edward Hopper and most importantly by Andrew Wyeth. From 1969 to 1971 Welling attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he studied with Gandy Brodie, John Stevenson, Connie Fox and Robert Tharsing. Welling moved to Los Angeles in 1995 to head the photography area in the Department of Art at UCLA. In Los Angeles he began to work with Muse [X] Editions, an innovative lab specializing in digital printing. In 1998 he returned to abstraction with 鈥淣ew Abstractions,鈥� a series of enlarged photograms. In 2010 Welling began a project based on the paintings of Andrew Wyeth.

The Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury presents “James Welling,鈥� works made in and听about Los Angeles. Ranging from his earliest photographs of Los Angeles architecture begun in 1975 to his most recent inkjet prints incorporating dance and architecture, “Choreograph,” the exhibition presents for the first time Welling’s two “glass house” projects together—buildings by Philip Johnson and Pierre Chareau and Bernard Bijvoet.
Each year the Institute presents the prestigious Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award to an early photographer who honors Shulman鈥檚 legacy and the Institute鈥檚 mission by challenging the way we look at physical space. Awardees include Iwan Baan (2010), Richard Barnes (2011), Pedro E. Guerrero (2012), Catherine Opie (2013), Grant Mudford (2014), and H茅l猫ne Binet (2015). Exhibitions have garnered extensive attention in the national and international press. The Institute also supports student photographers.

Photographer Julius Shulman established in 1995 with the goal of promoting an appreciation and understanding of the built environment, particularly as mediated by photography. This mission is carried out through public programming, educational outreach, and research opportunities. Focused on Shulman鈥檚 enduring involvement in the principles of modernism, the JSI is informed by Shulman鈥檚 sense of the social responsibility of the designer and imbued by his passion for teaching.
